Almost all were related to each other. Eight of them were siblings: Giuseppe, Napoleone, Luciano, Elisa, Luigi, Paolina, Carolina and Girolamo. The original spelling of their surname was Buonaparte. But during the course of their lifetimes Bonaparte become the most common spelling. Napoleone was in turn the father of Franz. Charles Louis Napoléon’s mother was Hortense de Beauharnais (1783 - 1837) who was married to Luigi. This is why he was named Bonaparte. However, he was not Luigi’s son and as such not related to the other ones.
